COL 150 - How is the Hidden Curriculum Upholding Grind Culture?
The hidden curriculum and grind culture definitely makes me wonder why society is like this. First off, what is a hidden curriculum? The hidden curriculum is the set of values and beliefs that are taught implicitly in schools and other educational institutions. These values and beliefs are not part of the formal curriculum, but they are communicated through the way that schools are organized, the way that teachers interact with students, and the way students are expected to behave.
One way that the hidden curriculum upholds grind culture is through the emphasis on grades and test scores. Students are taught that their worth is determined by their ability to perform well on tests and assignments, and that success in school is the key to success in life. This creates a culture of competition and comparison, where students are constantly trying to outdo each other and prove their worth.
Another way the hidden curriculum upholds grind culture is through the expectation that students should be busy all the time. Students are encouraged to take on multiple extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and part-time jobs, in addition to their academic work. This creates a culture of busyness, where students are expected to be constantly productive and never take a break.
Finally, the hidden curriculum upholds grind culture by reinforcing the idea that hard work is the key to success. Students are taught that if they work hard enough, they can achieve anything they want. While hard work is certainly an important factor in success, this message can be damaging if it is taken too far. It can lead to a culture of overwork and burnout, where students push themselves to the point of exhaustion in pursuit of their goals.
