COLL 150 - Who I Am? New identity as a college student
Hello! My name is Marlyn Dunlop and I am a recent graduate currently attending Rhode Island College. Thinking about my new identity as a college student is so weird to say. I actually can't believe I'm in college being a first-gen in my family to attend! Reflecting back to 10 years ago, I always thought of high school/ college like in the movies. I was born and raised in Newport, RI. Growing up here, I was a Disney kid and I was obsessed with high school musical...I still am! But I also loved seeing these characters perform on the big screen and always dreamed someday that would be me. By the time I reached the age of 6, I moved to Providence. Fast forward into high school... Well, let's just say this was nothing like high school musical. I attended the Met high school which is where I would spend my time learning about my interests and who I am as a person. I later discovered this through playing sports and modeling. This had led me to win medals, placing 1st in the 4x400 meter relay at State Championships, winning the title Miss Teen Quisqueya International 2023 despite having never done a pageant, being part of the Good Burgers 2 movie as a background performer and many more amazing opportunities. These experiences have helped shape my values which in term formed my identity. I remember my high school experience as very calm and mostly free. Now that I am in college it's so different. I have to be more independent, manage my time wisely, and take responsibility for my actions which are skills I need for the real world. Coming into college is also a fresh start where I would meet new people and gain connections. During my time here I will continue to do track and field and pursue my studies in theater and dance which is what I want to do in the future.
