COL 150 - How does the 2 readings tie in with this weeks theme?

In the two readings, I think identity and culture play a significant role in how we educate. This ties directly into the hidden curriculum and grind culture, both of which have affected our personal and academic lives and social behaviors within ourselves and the community. Through these readings, students shared stories about themselves and how they expressed their identity.

The first article takes place in Philadelphia where students used art on the wall to tell their stories and use their voices. They wanted to show people within the community that their stories mattered and deserved to be heard. However, tenants in the area did not find it appropriate in a school setting and was considered as “depressing to look at”. To me, this just goes to show how society is quick to criticize people of color and that they don’t really care enough to understand the reason for these stories.

In the second reading, a teacher got mad at a student and punished them for speaking their own language in class rather than the formal language. This plays a part in this week’s theme because it enforces how society expects us to act and how we are forced to employ through the hidden curriculum. Throughout this article, there is a strong message about the importance of remembering who you are and where you come from whether that's from a different culture, race, and even background as it is a part of you and your identity.
